Jon Herman Ulvensøen introduces theUniversity of South-Eastern Norway (USN) and his views on the SMAUG project!
Let us know more about yourself. How your expertise is linked with the project. What drives you to be involved in the project?
My name is Jon Herman Ulvensøen and I work as project manager in a number of national and international project at University of South-Eastern Norway (USN). My background is in MEMS based sensor technology, optics, and optical detection technology. The use of sensors and camaras to detect challenges or critical issues is vital for the security in a range of areas including ports.
USN’s role in SMAUG. In which activities you are involved? Which results do you expect to generate?
USN is focusing the work in two work packages (WP4 and WP6). Here we work with detection technology and the use of drones. We also work together with Maritime Robotics and Drammen port in the user case scenarios.
How do you think SMAUG is expected to impact the community?
Security is taken care of on the landside of a port (ISPS), but less is done on the seaside. The world situation today urges us to care more about security and safety. Another important issue is smuggling.
And finally, what is the most exciting part of the SMAUG project?
Detection technology in general (both optical and acoustic) is an important part of our work. I will also say that testing new technology in new environments is exciting.
