Nikos Dimakopoulos introduces ITML and his views on the SMAUG project!

Let us know more about yourself. How your expertise is linked with the project. What drives you to be involved in the project?

ITML, established in 2011 in Athens, Greece, is a fast-growing SME specializing in AI-based data management and cybersecurity services which are some of the key areas of research of the SMAUG project. Since 2017, its R&D involvement has led to workforce expansion and increased commercial potential, resulting in products tailored for local and regional business needs. ITML is committed to innovation, with expertise in Big Data, Analytics, Cybersecurity, Smart Transportation, Logistics, IoT, and data platforms. Its reputation is solidified through key roles in international consortia, earning trust in major projects and collaborations with RTOs, private companies, and PPPs like BDVA and Artemis. The skilled workforce excels in areas such as service-oriented architecture, cybersecurity, energy efficiency, e-government, and more, contributing significantly to research and innovation. ITML has participated in more than 60 R&D projects (31 completed, 31 ongoing including 1 coordination) and its extensive experience both as a technology provider and system integrator.

ITML’s role in SMAUG. In which activities you are involved? Which results do you expect to generate?

ITML, as an SME boasting substantial expertise in AI-driven trustworthy data fusion and knowledge management systems, undertakes the tasks associated with developing the control portal for maritime security information. Additionally, ITML oversees the implementation of security and digitalization mechanisms. These responsibilities encompass managing the capabilities of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles for underwater detection and control, along with the integration and management of data collected from diverse sources.

How do you think SMAUG is expected to impact the community?

SMAUG is poised to make a significant impact on the community by providing solutions for monitoring underwater activities that pose potential threats to harbors. Specifically, the demonstration of SMAUG’s capabilities could greatly assist in detecting illegal activities perpetrated by third parties, who exploit ship hulls for transporting illicit goods, notably drugs. Through the adoption of SMAUG’s solutions, significant strides can be made towards mitigating this illicit market. Moreover, the deployment of SMAUG is expected to bolster the situational awareness of authorities tasked with maritime security. The ability to detect smuggling vessels at sea is a pivotal challenge for coastal states, especially those with constrained resources and vast search and rescue responsibilities. By enhancing detection capabilities, SMAUG stands to enhance the effectiveness of coastal security measures and safeguard maritime interests.

And finally, what is the most exciting part of the SMAUG project?

One of the most compelling elements of the SMAUG project resides in its capacity to redefine maritime security by harnessing cutting-edge technology. The project boasts the collaboration of 23 participants, alongside 2 affiliates, representing top-tier organizations from 7 European countries. Their diverse areas of expertise complement one another, enabling the project to effectively meet its objectives. In essence, the prospect of deploying advanced technology to confront intricate maritime challenges underscores the excitement and promise inherent in the SMAUG initiative. Its potential implications extend globally, offering significant opportunities for enhancing the safety of coastal communities and fortifying the resilience of maritime industries worldwide.
