Let’s sail away to meet the SMAUG partners.

Elefsis Port Authority SA (Greece)

George Kontoulis introduces Elefsis Port Authority SA and his views on the SMAUG project!

Let us know more about yourself. How your expertise is linked with the project. What drives you to be involved in the project?

Elefsis Port Authority SA (EPA), also known as the Port of Elefsis or Eleusis Port, is located in Elefsina (also spelled Eleusis), a town in the Attica region of Greece. The expertise of Elefsis Port can be linked in several ways, leveraging the port’s existing knowledge, infrastructure, and operational requirements. Elefsis Port’s expertise can be a crucial asset in the successful development and implementation of the SMAUG project and particularly the successful use case implementation. By leveraging its knowledge in security, operations, environmental stewardship, and emergency response, the port can contribute to the project’s effectiveness in enhancing underwater monitoring and management capabilities. Collaboration between port authorities, technology developers, and relevant stakeholders is key to the successful integration of such advanced technologies. Elefsis Port has interest in participating in the project aiming at: Enhanced Security, Environmental Stewardship, Infrastructure Maintenance and Monitoring, Optimizing Operations, Emergency Response and Risk Mitigation, Technological Innovation and Competitiveness, Community Relations, Regulatory Compliance.

Elefsis Port Authority’s role in SMAUG. In which activities you are involved? Which results do you expect to generate?

Elefsis Port (EPA) has a significant role in SMAUG project, focusing on enhancing underwater detection capabilities in the port of Elefsis to combat smuggling and particularly drug trafficking. Located strategically near the capital of Greece (Athens) and extending over 65km, EPA’s involvement in SMAUG is driven by the need to address current weak points in underwater security systems, which are vital for the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. Elefsis Port (EPA) activities within the project are concentrated on analyzing end-users’ and authorities’ requirements, as well as the implementation of advanced surveillance technologies in the Greek use case, while ensuring the execution and validation of the use case applies in a real-world scenario. Through these tasks, EPA leverages its maritime infrastructure and expertise to contribute significantly to the project’s success. Expected outcomes from EPA’s participation in SMAUG include the enhanced capability to detect underwater threats, such as hidden narcotics and the establishment of an innovative, interoperable framework for maritime security. This project is anticipated to lead to safer maritime routes by deterring smuggling activities and fostering a secure environment for maritime commerce, thereby reinforcing EPA’s commitment to advancing maritime security. It’s important to note that specific expectations would vary based on the project’s objectives, the features of the Smart Underwater Guardian, and the unique needs of Elefsis Port. Clear communication, collaboration with project partners, and ongoing evaluation are crucial for realizing the anticipated benefits.

How do you think SMAUG is expected to impact the community?

It’s important to note that the specific impact would depend on the features, capabilities, and applications of the Smart Underwater Guardian in question, as well as the extent to which it is adopted and integrated into existing port infrastructure. However, we can provide some general insights into how smart technologies in the underwater domain, such as smart monitoring systems, might impact ports and communities.

Enhanced Security: Smart Underwater Guardians could play a crucial role in enhancing security by monitoring underwater activities around ports. They can detect and respond to potential security threats, such as unauthorized vessel movements or suspicious underwater activities, contributing to overall port security.

Environmental Monitoring: These systems could be equipped with sensors to monitor the underwater environment, helping to detect pollution, changes in water quality, or other environmental concerns. This information can be valuable for maintaining a sustainable and eco-friendly port operation.

Infrastructure Maintenance: Smart underwater technologies can be employed for inspecting and maintaining underwater infrastructure, such as docks, piers, and pipelines. Regular inspections can help identify and address issues before they escalate, ensuring the longevity of port infrastructure.

Improved Navigation and Traffic Management: Smart monitoring systems can assist in mapping underwater terrain, optimizing navigation routes for vessels, and managing underwater traffic. This can lead to more efficient and safer maritime traffic relating to port operations.

Emergency Response: In the event of accidents, spills, or other emergencies, Smart Underwater Guardians can quickly respond and provide critical information to facilitate emergency response efforts, helping to minimize the impact on the community and the environment.

Economic Impact: By improving overall port efficiency, reducing downtime due to maintenance issues, and enhancing security, these smart underwater systems can contribute to the economic prosperity of both the port and the surrounding community.

Technological Innovation: The deployment of advanced underwater technologies can position a port as a leader in technological innovation. This may attract investment, research collaborations, and new businesses to the area, positively impacting the local community.

And finally, what is the most exciting part of the SMAUG project?

A spectrum of potential exciting aspects are associated with advanced underwater technologies and smart monitoring systems. The most exciting part for Elefsis Port Authority could be the potential positive impact on the port and the surrounding community. This could include improved safety, economic benefits, and environmental sustainability. A project that addresses the needs and concerns of both the port authorities and the local community would likely generate mutual awareness and community support for port activities.
