Athanor-Engineering (France)

Bruno Bender introduces Athanor-Engineering and his views on the SMAUG project!

Let us know more about yourself. How your expertise is linked with the project. What drives you to be involved in the project?

Athanor-Engineering is a recognized actor of maritime security in France willing to develop its Research and Development activities by further-developing solutions for the maritime domain and proposing them to European customers. The company’s past involvement in EU projects has been recognized by its participation in the development of CISE (project CISE EXT) and HORIZON 2020 AI-ARCTIC project.

Athanor-Engineering’s role in SMAUG. In which activities you are involved? Which results do you expect to generate?

Athanor-Engineering is a French SME specialized in maritime security solutions. The company is organized around two areas, the first one dedicated to the conduct of studies or consultancy and the second one in the realization of maritime security solutions, based on the AIS technology. The company has developed a secure extended AIS transponder that is actively used on French Navy ships since 2015. Innovative player in the definition of maritime security and RF communication solutions, for civil and military use, ATHANOR designs and manufactures low speed resilient exchange solutions (VHF, IoT/S-IoT…), offering its customers dedicated solutions adapted to an operational use in the maritime field.

How do you think SMAUG is expected to impact the community?

SMAUG could impact the community in providing some solution to monitor underwater activities that could represent a threat to harbors. The demonstration could in particular help the detection of illegal activities conducted by third parties using the Hull of a ship as a mean of transportation for illegal goods (drugs in particular).

And finally, what is the most exciting part of the SMAUG project?

For Athanor-Engineering, the most exciting part of the project will consist in further developing its AIS based communication solution and include new data sources provided by underwater vehicles and sensors.
