SMAUG General Assembly Meeting in Crete Reflections

SMAUG held its 3rd General Assembly meeting in Heraklion, Crete, during a two-day event on October 22-23. The meeting was organised and hosted by the Heraklion Port Authority (HPA), and it was an excellent opportunity for the SMAUG partners to physically meet and discuss the progress and future work of the project.

Day 1: Exploring progress across work packages

The first day began with a warm welcome from the HPA, serving as the meeting’s host and closely following the agenda, quickly moved into detailed presentations on various work packages (WPs), each representing critical activities of the project’s implementation.

During the first day, work packages 1 to 3 were presented, including the project’s activities regarding Project Management, Legality Attentive Dimensions, and Maritime Security information management. The main focus of the day was on Work Package 6, titled “Use Cases”, where the project’s use cases were presented and thoroughly discussed. Throughout SMAUG’s implementation, four use case scenarios will be carried out across three different ports.

  • Use Case 1 – Valencia (Presented by Valencia Port Authority)
  • Use Case 2 – Greece (Presented by HPA/Elefsis Port Authority)
  • Use Case 3 – Drammen (Presented by University of Southern Norway)

The day concluded with the Council of Partners.

Day 2 Insights

Day two focused on in-depth technical and strategic discussions, featuring presentations of Work Packages 4 and 5, which are dedicated to Underwater Detection and Location, and the Smart Integration of Data Sources. Additionally, Work Package 7, “Outreach, Exploitation, and Collaboration” showcased the project’s outreach initiatives and collaborative efforts.

The meeting ended with a field visit at the Heraklion Port and a wonderful tour of the Heraklion Port Authority on their premises and the execution environment of the pilot use cases.

Looking Ahead

The General Assembly meeting marked another milestone for SMAUG, providing project partners with the opportunity to review progress achieved over the first twelve months of the project’s implementation. It also offered a valuable chance for in-person collaboration as partners gathered in Crete, where they visited the Heraklion port, one of the designated sites for the project’s use case execution.

With significant progress and a clear roadmap, SMAUG will continue its journey to secure the maritime environment.
