SMAUG Control Portal: Facilitating the Full Exploitation of Maritime Security Information into Actionable Knowledge

The control portal will feature intelligent interfaces designed for seamless interaction and optimised user experience across various stakeholders. It will integrate and analyze data, providing a comprehensive overview with interactive capabilities to support threat identification and monitoring.

SMAUG Control Portal: The Overview

The SMAUG Control Portal is designed as a cutting-edge, intuitive platform for maritime security, providing port authorities with enhanced situational awareness and real-time monitoring of potential threats. With an interface tailored to its end-users, the portal integrates data from multiple data sources, including AIS/Copernicus, underwater hydrophones, UAVs, and UVVs, ensuring a seamless operational workflow. Built upon advanced visual analytics and modelling technologies, the Control Portal aims to transform vast amounts of information into actionable intelligence, allowing port officers to detect and respond to security risks efficiently. By integrating efforts from multiple work packages, the Control Portal aims to deliver an intuitive, explainable, and efficient tool that empowers port authorities to effectively counter the identified potential threats, thereby enhancing their operational capabilities and situational awareness.

Current Status

The development of the SMAUG Control Portal follows an Agile methodology, ensuring iterative refinement based on feedback from SMAUG’s technical partners and end-users. Currently, the portal remains in the design and early development phase, with UI mock-ups (2 options –  Figure 1) actively evaluated through working group sessions withing the regular monthly telcos.

The path toward a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of the Control Portal is already well-defined, emphasizing usability testing, feedback-driven enhancements, and alignment with security best practices. While full-scale implementation has not yet commenced, foundational components, such as user management via Keycloak2² and data visualization through Apache ECharts3³, which are mapped out for seamless integration into the portal.

Challenges and Risks

Developing a control portal for maritime security information of this scale presents several key challenges. First, the integration of multiple data sources and real-time threat analytics requires robust interoperability between various technologies and datasets. Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-driven anomaly detection is crucial to minimizing false positives and negatives. Additionally, UI accessibility and usability must be optimized to align with port officers’ workflows while remaining adaptable to future operational needs. From a cybersecurity perspective maintaining data protection and compliance is vital, particularly when handling sensitive security intelligence. The ITML team aims to address these challenges through thorough testing, stakeholder engagement, and adherence to web development best practices.

Expectations for Operation and Impact

Upon full deployment, the SMAUG Control Portal will be operated by a security officer within port authorities, with operational oversight from trained personnel skilled in threat assessment and response. The portal will be designed to function as a centralized intelligence hub, streamlining decision-making by providing clear, explainable insights derived from data analyses. The expected impact is substantial, port officers will gain enhanced almost real-time visibility, improved anomaly detection capabilities and greater situational awareness to mitigate threats such as illegal trafficking, smuggling, and maritime security breaches. By fostering a data-driven security approach, the portal aims to play a critical role in reforming maritime threat response, ensuring safer and more resilient port operations across the EU and beyond.
