SMAUG at the European Commission’s CERIS event

On February 25th, the SMAUG project was presented at CERIS event hosted by the European Commission. Juan-Román Martínez Arranz, from INDRA, the project’s coordinator, alongside with Esther Salmoral Olaya from the Agencia Tributaria, represented SMAUG, sharing the project’s insights and highlighting its aim: to improve and enhance the security of ports and their entrance routes.

As part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, SMAUG (Smart Maritime and Underwater Guardian) brings together top entities from seven European countries to advance underwater threat detection and combat illicit trafficking. With over 80% of global trade conducted by sea, ensuring robust and effective security at ports and coastal areas is more critical than ever.

How does SMAUG enhance security?

  • Advanced underwater detection using hydrophones, sonar scanning, and high-resolution inspections
  • Coordinated autonomous underwater vehicles for tracking and monitoring threats
  • AI-powered analytics for early detection of illicit activities, including narco-submarines
  • Integration with Indra’s iSIM solution to unify data from security systems, drones, autonomous vehicles, and satellite surveillance
  • International Collaboration for Safer Seas
