SMAUG at the International Transport Forum (ITF) 2026 Summit
The ITF Annual Summit is the world’s largest gathering of transport ministers and the premier global transport policy event. This year’s Summit explored ways to mobilise the investments and financing strategies needed to strengthen the resilience of transport systems for better long-term connectivity, efficiency, and reliability in transport infrastructure and operations.
The SMAUG project had the opportunity to participate in the summit, with Professor Maria Boile, Director of the Laboratory of Quantitative Analysis in Shipping, representing it. She actively engaged in the dedicated session “Spotlight on Research: Enhancing Digital Resilience”, where she presented a joint article on “Enhancing the security of port infrastructure through the use of advanced digital surveillance tools: The SMAUG Project and its pilot implementation in the Port of Elefsina”.
The paper presented the SMAUG project and its pilot implementation at the Port of Elefsina, focusing on enhancing port security through advanced digital surveillance technologies. The study demonstrates how the integration of AI-driven multi-layered monitoring systems, including UAVs, USVs, ROVs, sonar, and hydrophones, can improve maritime situational awareness and detect potential security threats in both surface and underwater environments.
The pilot scenario evaluated the system’s ability to identify suspicious activities and support faster operational response by port and coast guard authorities. The findings highlight the importance of interoperable digital surveillance infrastructures in strengthening port resilience and protecting critical maritime infrastructure.
