SMAUG Innovation Update Series: Smart Integration of Data Sources

Smart integration of data sources through SMAUG involves bringing together data from different sources and integrating them intelligently to enable smart, AI-assisted, informed decisions. Data from many different UxV devices, existing assets and external sources such as AIS have been brought together to create a map-based user interface with alerts from combined sources. The biggest challenge so far has been extracting valuable data from the many different devices and presenting them in a format that can be combined together. A common data platform has been set up with standard message types, ensuring that information from all devices can be converted to a common format and that combined alerts can be generated from both new and legacy devices.

The Lemvos perspective, who are working with underwater sonar detection:

“This is one of the most important individual detection methods within SMAUG. From the sonar data we provide, AI algorithms have been developed and used by other partners to create intelligent alerts for next steps. In simple terms, the underwater sonar reduces the cost and risks of divers performing the search. This data, combined with other data from other partners analysing risk factors, makes SMAUG a powerful tool.”

Expected outcomes for the final phase of the SMAUG project:

“At the end of SMAUG, we will have a valuable system enabling significant time saving and increased security for ports and customs authorities, when introduced as a real system. Individual aspects of SMAUG, even when used alone, provide some benefits for port security, but the system becomes much more powerful when used as a whole.”

Inner Dialogue with Lemvos

“From an individual company perspective, SMAUG has been extremely valuable in building relationships with stakeholders and end users in the marine domain, providing genuine insight into their real security needs. This, along with an understanding of other technical aspects which other companies bring, provides valuable insight into how we can use SMAUG and aspects of SMAUG in future applications beyond the end of the project.”
