SMAUG Project in the Spotlight: USN Bachelor Engineering Students Had a Joint Technology Demonstration with Kongsberg Discovery!
Students from the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) conducted a live demonstration of advanced underwater and surface monitoring technologies aimed at enhancing maritime security. Three groups demonstrated their work with Kongsberg Discovery.
One group has developed a hydrophone system for detection of passing vessels. This is a work funded by the SMAUG EU project.
One group of students had developed an acoustic positioning system for an ROV. This is Kongsberg funded work, but still relevant to the scope and objectives of the SMAUG project.
The last group, the student organization Navier USN, presented their self-developed autonomous surface vessel, equipped with advanced sensors and state-of-the-art technology. They are a student-driven robotics group that compete in ASV competitions (lastly in Florida). This is also Kongsberg funded, but also relevant to the SMAUG Project.
Research into detecting underwater threats like smuggling and sabotage is also being pursued in SMAUG. USN is a project partner, responsible for anti-sabotage efforts using sonar technology to improve underwater visibility.
The demonstration was also covered by local TV and Radio.
