SMAUG Showcased at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair: Shaping the Future of Port Security

The Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), held every September at Thessaloniki, has stood for nearly a century as Greece’s leading exhibition and development institution. With its multifaceted character, it serves as a hub of political dialogue, business outreach, and innovation. The fair brings together governments, investors, companies, and citizens, creating a dynamic arena of exchange and collaboration that reflects both national aspirations and international trends. This year, the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) took place from September 6th to 14th, 2025, and the SMAUG project was there to showcase its innovative solutions and tools.

At Pavilion 17 (Academia), Stand 40, project partners from the University of Piraeus and its Laboratory of Quantitative Analysis in Shipping presented the SMAUG project. The booth attracted significant interest from visitors and high-level officials, including ministers, senior government representatives, and members of local authorities, all of whom engaged with the project and expressed interest in its scope, which focuses on securing ports and the maritime environment.

SMAUG at the Heart of Innovation

Ports are not just gateways for global trade, they are also vulnerable targets for security threats.

Recognising this, SMAUG brings together Artificial Intelligence, cutting-edge detection technologies, and surveillance systems to create a powerful, integrated solution for port security.

Professor Maria Boile, Director of the Laboratory of Quantitative Analysis in Shipping, presented SMAUG’s technological and operational dimensions to officials, researchers, and visitors at TIF. As she emphasised: “SMAUG’s contribution is pivotal, as it enables ports to move to a new level of protection, combining existing know-how with cutting-edge technology.”

Supporting the presentation were the researchers Angelos Angelakakis (PhD, Department of Maritime Studies), Georgios Danis (Scientific Associate), and Christos Nedeloglou (PhD, Department of Maritime Studies).

The presence of the SMAUG project at the Thessaloniki International Fair highlighted the University of Piraeus’ leadership in maritime innovation and research excellence, demonstrating the strength and expertise of the consortium involved. More than a technological project, SMAUG represents a strategic effort to enhance the safety of citizens, businesses, and Europe’s maritime gateways.
