SMAUG End Users’ Requirements Analysis
Understanding the requirements of end users and authorities involved in port security issues is a critical component of the SMAUG project, given that the maritime security environment is characterised by high complexity and continuous evolution. A dedicated task in the SMAUG project aims to ensure that the solutions developed align closely with operational realities and stakeholder priorities.
The approach is carefully structured to facilitate clear, efficient communication with stakeholders and to comprehensively document all critical requirements consisting of four steps.
1. Stakeholder Identification: The process begins with identifying key end-users and authorities who have a direct interest in maritime security, particularly within port and harbour environments.
2. Requirements Collection: In this phase, structured questionnaires will be distributed to the selected stakeholders. These questionnaires serve as a foundation for capturing initial expectations. Following this, targeted interviews will be conducted to clarify responses and gather deeper insights.
3. Requirements Classification: Once collected, the requirements will be organized into five categories: functional, technical, transitional, operational, and safety & security requirements. This classification helps structure the design and implementation phases of the project.
4. Validation and Documentation: The final step involves interpreting and recording the validated key requirements. An online validation workshop will be held to review findings and confirm consensus among stakeholders.
Current Status
Valuable data was collected from port security authorities and management entities through a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire examined issues, such as the assessment of potential and future threats, integration of command-and-control systems, data management, automation needs and future technological advancements.
The results, collected and evaluated, highlight the necessity of implementing and leveraging cutting-edge technologies, automated systems, while ensuring optimal coordination among stakeholders.
Finally, the conclusions drawn serve as the foundation for developing targeted recommendations and directions aimed at strengthening port security.
